Families often ask us when they should schedule professional photographs. The best answer depends on what you want to remember: the shape and anticipation of pregnancy, the tiny details of a newborn, a baby's new expressions and movements, or the excitement just before the first birthday. Planning by milestone makes the choice much easier.
Maternity photoshoot: around 28–34 weeks
For many pregnancies, the late second trimester to early third trimester gives a good balance: the bump is beautifully visible while the mother may still feel comfortable enough for posing, wardrobe changes and a relaxed studio session. Every pregnancy is different, so comfort and medical guidance come first. If you are expecting twins or have been advised to limit activity, consider planning earlier.

Newborn photoshoot: ideally in the first few weeks
Newborn sessions are often planned during pregnancy and confirmed after the baby arrives. Very young babies may sleep more deeply and naturally curl into classic newborn positions, while slightly older babies may give more awake expressions and eye contact. We treat the age window as guidance rather than a deadline—the baby's feeding, comfort, recovery and wellbeing determine the pace.
If your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, simply update the studio. A flexible booking window is more useful than trying to predict an exact date months in advance.
Three to six months: expressions and early personality
This stage can be wonderful for babies who are beginning to smile, hold their head steadily and engage with parents. The session style becomes more interactive than a newborn shoot, with close portraits, parent-and-baby frames and simple milestone photographs.
Six to nine months: sitter milestone
Once a baby can sit safely without support, photographs can include a wider range of expressions, outfits and simple sets. Rather than choosing the date only by age, watch for the developmental milestone: confident independent sitting is usually more important than an exact month number.
Pre-birthday photoshoot: around 10–12 months
If you want photographs ready for invitations, décor or first-birthday sharing, schedule the pre-birthday session a few weeks before the celebration. This leaves time for image selection and final editing. A cake-smash concept can be combined with clean portraits so the gallery includes both playful and timeless photographs.

Family photos: choose the season your family can enjoy
There is no age deadline for a family portrait. Choose a time when everyone can arrive without rushing and children are likely to be rested. For younger children, a familiar routine and comfortable clothes usually matter more than elaborate posing. Coordinated tones photograph beautifully; everyone does not need to wear identical outfits.

A simple milestone timeline
Pregnancy: reserve maternity and newborn sessions. 28–34 weeks: maternity portraits. First few weeks: newborn photographs. 3–6 months: smiles and early interaction. 6–9 months: sitter milestone. 10–12 months: pre-birthday and first-birthday portraits. The exact timing should always be adapted to your family.
Book early, but keep the plan flexible
Popular dates can fill in advance, especially weekends. Reserving early gives you more choice, but a good photography plan should still allow for pregnancy, delivery dates, naps, feeding and a child's mood. Our goal is a calm experience rather than forcing a milestone into a rigid schedule.
